Tinos is famous for its elaborate dovecote or pigeon houses ( peristerionas ) which are scattered around. There are supposed to be 1,000 of them in total. In Tarambados, a town you pass after ten kilometers after Tinos on your way north, they are particularly numerous. The pigeon houses are small houses with two floors. The first floor is used as a warehouse, while the pigeons live upstairs. What makes the dovecots on Tinos so special is that they are richly decorated with stylized crucifixes and other patterns. It was the Venetians who brought the knowledge of pigeon breeding to Tinos.
